I can't say how skilled the dentists are here, because after my consultation, I decided I didn't want them anywhere near my teeth!
First of all, the atmosphere resembled a free clinic, jam-packed with people lined up in rows in a tiny, charm-free waiting room that shares space with a walk-in doctor (germaphobes, beware!)
After a LOOONG wait, I was brought back to a common area --not even a curtain for privacy--where I had xrays done by a very nervous technician. The mood was set by TVs blaring awful rap music videos with misogynistic lyrics. Then, when I finally saw the dentist, I feel like he was pushing the most expensive treatment possible...and he kept saying "it's not even worth submitting to your HMO because there's no one to even submit to"...uh, what?!?! He had the name of my insurance and was telling me what the cost of everything was based on that insurance, and went I went home and called my insurance they told me every figure he gave was incorrect. For example, he wanted to charge $250 for a cleaning--he said that included my insurance discount--when in fact I get 2 free cleanings a year. I can't express how relieved I was that I didn't let him do work right there and then, as he wished (now I know why--I would've had to pay up front and I'd never see a dime back, I'm sure)!
Anyway, $25 and a terrible copy of my xrays later (which I'm sure are non-diagnostic quality) I was happy to get out of there.
They may be very competent and skilled dentists (they are UCLA and USC grads, after all, which is respectable) , but I didn't trust them one bit, nor could I imagine having serious dental work done in that atmosphere.
